Insure Your Vacation

Written By Michele Graham

When planning your vacation the one thing you may not want to think about is what could go wrong.

But realizing that a lot can go wrong can be the first step to protecting yourself, because that can lead to the realization that travel insurance needs to be part of your planning.

No matter what destination or mode of travel you might decide on, travel insurances is one way to protect you and your investment if an unavoidable event might occur that will interrupt, delay or even cancel your trip.

There are a lot of types of travel insurance, from policies that refund your costs if you are forced to cancel your trip to those that provide assistance to you if you are stranded, lose your luggage, or become ill.

If you are not shouldering the costs of reservation fees, traveling within the United States and are a member of a group such as AAA, you may not feel the need for this kind of insurance. However, most health insurance plans are limited to the state of purchase and often to a set network, so if you become sick or have an accident in another state, you could be facing inflated medical bills.

Medical travel insurance, depending on the type of coverage, may assist with these costs in the U.S. or in other countries as well. Should you require a prolonged stay in the hospital, certain policies are in place to assist with your relocation to a facility which is more convenient for you.

What happens if a medical emergency occurs just before departure and you are unable to continue your trip where reservation fees and plane tickets have already been paid? Trip cancellation insurance can cover the cost for the "non refundable" prepaid travel expenses, although this might not make up for having to cancel the vacation you dreamed of but helps to lessen the burden. The accepted reasons for cancellation vary depending on the policy, but typically cover illness, an accident or death involving the insured, a family member or traveling companion. Some plans may even accept work related issues or any reason at all for cancellation.

Other types of travel insurance geared towards students, business travelers, missionaries, or those in a high risk line of work, may help with lost luggage, flight cancellations and even family members in recovering a body of a traveler who dies abroad, or provide life insurance for those who loses a family member during travel.

Preparation for worst can pay off even if none of us want to think about them on our vacation. Peace of mind might be all you get, but if something does go wrong, depending on the coverage, type of trip and the circumstances, it certainly pays off.
