Walking Is Simplest Fitness Plan
Written By Marshall French
It doesn't matter what you do, where you live or how much you have, there is one method of fitness you can always do.
Requiring nothing more than a good pair of walking shoes, walking is good for your heart, help you shed that extra pound or two and improve your health in general. The Americans are more obese than Europeans because of the lack of walking, this is also the same reason why urban residents are less heavier than their rural counterparts.
If you watch TV, then you've seen commercials touting the benefits of walking in conjunction with trying to sell you a treadmill of some type to lower your weight and get fit. Among the benefits of walking are the lowering of bad cholesterol and the raising of the good, lowering blood pressure, reduce the risk or help in the management of type 2 diabetes and to improve your mood.
Spending hundreds of dollars on fancy equipment is not needed to enjoy the benefits of walking. The only thing you need is to find a safe place to walk, it can be at a park, track, mall or even a department store. Either one will offer you changing scenery and a chance to meet other walkers, while going outside may also offer you differing terrains and more variety - although with the challenge of changing weather conditions.
If you have any fitness concerns then you should consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program. Check out local gyms or fitness centers if you are not fit enough to be walking on your own. There are many facilities that offer special programs to monitor your heart, weight and your body in general to help you slowly get back into a fitness routine. In some cases, these programs may qualify for insurance benefits as well.
The only thing you really need to start immediately is a quality pair of walking shoes, whether you are on a guided program or on your own. Investing on good quality walking shoes is really essential considering that they are supporting your feet, legs and back.
Wearing comfortable clothes is also important whether you are indoors or out. Layers are good as you will warm up from internal heat when your heart rate rises, even if external conditions do not change. If you are walking outdoors, you need to wear bright colors so that motorists can see you, especially if you're crossing the street or walking through an area with no sidewalks.
Start out with a slow walk to allow your muscles to warm up. Depending on your initial fitness level, you may also need to stop and stretch after your muscles are warmer. Be sure to end each walking session with a slower walk to cool down and more stretches to help avoid injury.
MP3 players may help pass the time but using these devices is not advisable especially if you are going through any unfamiliar or uncontrolled area. Being aware of approaching objects, people or animals is more important than your music particularly in this instance.
Find a walking partner if you need motivation. If possible, find a friend to walk with you. A dog is a great walking companion and one that will see to it that you walk daily.
